COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

The Community Leadership Development Program is a training program that aims to develop leadership skills and confidence in individuals who wish to play a leadership role in their community.

The Community Leadership Development Program will be delivered through a series of practical workshops covering four modules:

  • Communications and fostering effective relationships
  • Task management
  • External support and resources
  • Business planning and management

The Program includes activities that will assist participants to start and plan a project for their community.

Who can apply?

The program is for community leaders and aspiring community leaders from the new and emerging communities, including the Karen, Sudanese, Afghani, Iraqi and Sri Lankin communities. This program is for North-side Canberra community groups.

If you are not a community leader but wish to take a leadership role in your community, you must be nominated by your community association.

How do I apply?

To apply for the program, you must submit a Community Leadership Development Program application form (included with this brochure) to the Migrant and Refugee Settlement Services (MARSS).

Applications for the Community Leadership Development Program close on the 9th September 2009.

Applicants may be requested to attend an interview as part of the selection process. If required, you will be contacted by MARSS and a suitable time will be arranged for the interview.

When and where will the program be delivered?

The Community Leadership Development Program will commence in September 2009 and will finish in May 2010. It will be held on Wednesday evenings from 5.30pm – 8pm at the Theo Notaras Multicultural Centre.


What assistance will I receive?

The Community Leadership Development Program is free to selected participants of the program. Interpreting services will be made available to participants to assist with learning and the development of skills. All training materials will be supplied to participants.

Q: How often will the training be?
A:The training will be every second Wednesday evening, commencing 30 September 2009.
Q: Do I have to be a community leader?
A: No. You could be an aspiring community leader. However, you must be nominated by your community association so that the community benefits from your training.
